How it works
The technology

District heating is an established and proven technology in many parts of continental Europe, including far colder climates than ours such as Scandinavia. The networks enable the efficient transportation and use of heat for a wide variety of users, and hence extend the reach of low carbon renewable heating technologies.

District heating systems are most efficient when they can balance the supply and generation of heat, across location and over time. Over the course of the day, heat demand shifts between residential consumers to commercial, industrial and public buildings and back again. A heat network can match and manage these flows, whilst maximising the utilisation of the plant providing the heat. Demand can also be managed across seasons, with networks supporting the operation of distributed absorption cooling plants in the summer providing cooling on a significant scale.

The system can incorporate a range of generation technologies, working together to meet demand for heat in the most efficient way to secure reductions in CO2 emissions, operational costs and improving security of supply.
Sustainable pricing

The change to district heating is a substantial infrastructure change for the UK, and requires a long-term analysis and viewpoint. This has arguably sadly often been missing from the short term return requirements many capital projects have been assessed on.

By assessing the long-term fuel supply options, and building flexibility into the system, we aim to work with customers in tackling fuel poverty by not being locked into a single fuel source.

Our responsibility is to work in partnership with customers on operational and asset management, taking a long-term view to deliver beneficial and sustainable improvements for all stakeholders.
Case studies

Our Power - RPE has worked with a consortia of social housing providers to successfully launch Our Power Energy Ltd - a social enterprise energy supply company - which aims to offer affordable energy to low-income consumers and benefit communities living in fuel poverty. Read more

Ferneylea wind farm - RPE has developed and is now running a 1.5MW wind farm in East Lothian. The project was supported by Community Energy Scotland, who acted as project manager, and cornerstone financing came from an Edinburgh housing association, who are re-investing returns into activities addressing fuel poverty. Read more
Ravensworth - 2.2MW biomass heating installation. Providing heat to a commercial horticultural growing business throughout the winter and plant growing season, and nearby multiple domestic dwellings.
Village heating scheme - The installation of a new 200kW biomass district heating system in a rural off-gas village. Providing heat to the church, pub and 8 domestic dwellings.
